Moxa
Warming therapy using dried mugwort herb to stimulate acupuncture points and promote the flow of qi and blood.
What is Moxa?
Moxa, short for moxibustion, is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves burning dried mugwort herb (Artemisia vulgaris) near or on specific acupuncture points. The gentle warming effect stimulates these points and promotes the flow of qi and blood throughout the body.
This ancient technique has been used alongside acupuncture for thousands of years and continues to be valued for its therapeutic warming properties.
How Moxa Works
Dried mugwort is formed into sticks, cones, or placed on the handle of an acupuncture needle. When lit, it produces a penetrating heat that warms the acupuncture point without burning the skin.
The warming sensation from moxa is gentle and therapeutic. Most patients find the experience relaxing and enjoy the herb’s distinctive, earthy aroma during treatment.
When Moxa May Be Used
Dr. Spinali may incorporate moxibustion into your treatment based on your individual presentation and therapeutic needs. The decision to use moxa is made on a case-by-case basis, taking into account your specific condition and response to treatment.
Moxa can be used alone or combined with acupuncture and other modalities as part of your personalized treatment plan.
