Gua Sha
Ancient scraping technique used to increase circulation, reduce inflammation, and release muscle tension.
What is Gua Sha?
Gua sha is an ancient Chinese medicine technique that involves using a smooth-edged tool to apply pressure and scrape the skin in long strokes. This therapeutic scraping increases circulation to the treated area and supports the body’s natural healing process.
The term “gua sha” translates to “scraping sand” or “scraping away illness,” reflecting the traditional understanding that this technique helps move stagnation and restore healthy circulation.
How Gua Sha Works
A smooth tool, traditionally made of jade, horn, or other materials, is pressed firmly against the skin and moved in repeated strokes across specific areas. Oil or balm is applied to the skin first to allow smooth movement of the tool.
Like cupping, gua sha creates temporary marks on the skin that typically fade within a few days. These marks, called “sha,” indicate increased blood flow to the surface and are a normal part of the therapeutic process.
When Gua Sha May Be Used
Dr. Spinali may incorporate gua sha into your treatment based on your individual needs and how your body responds to assessment. The decision to use gua sha is made individually for each patient and situation.
Gua sha can be used as a standalone therapy or integrated with acupuncture and other modalities as part of your comprehensive treatment plan.
